Bronze Age ship sets sail for Derby

Neolithic and Bronze Age

<< News >>

A three-and-a-half thousand year old ship - discovered in 1998 - is about to leave its laboratory home in York to weigh anchor at Derby Museum and Art Gallery in March reports This Is York.

The ship - found in a quarry, still with its last cargo of square blocks of stone in tact - has undergone a three-year restoration project carried out by curators with York Archaeological Trust.

After recovery the boat was submerged in a tank for two years before spending eight weeks in a freeze drier.

The ship was carved out of a single oak tree, and at ten metres long it is both the oldest and largest piece of wood ever conserved at the laboratory centre in York.

If you get chance to visit this amazing log boat then do. It is spectacular. You can get right up close to it. I regularly go and stare at it. Derby Museum is pretty good aswell. Good selection of paleolithic, mesolithic, neolithic and bronze age artifacts. Some great hammer axes and a lovely display of hand axes. They have an extensive collection in their stores including some sensational Maori items (sadly not on display). Ask very very nicely and they might just let you come and see them.
