The Mesolithic period in Britain gets over-shadowed by the later Neolithic and Bronze ages. The Mesolithic was 5000 years in the making and at this time Britain was still joined to mainland Europe by a mass of land archaeologists call Doggerland.

So much has been lost underwater from this time of the hunter-gatherers, that what is left is a tiny percentage showing how these people used to live.

lt is perhaps a general preconception that these people were less advanced at living than Neolithic/Bronze Age people. With Graeme Warren addressing these issues using a hands-on approach, it is a great introduction to the Mesolithic people of this land and it concentrates on Scotland as a whole.

My first impression of this book was that it's an easy book to read - not only that but at the end of every chapter it has a review with further reading references plus an interjection of relevant information. This is added as a reading aid to help you remember what you have just read. Sounds confusing l know, but this makes it a very enjoyable read.

After reading this book, l feel like l have been transported back in time to live with these people for a short period, learning how to make tools and hunt and fish in an ever changing landscape of the Mesolithic period in Scotland.

This is a great read for the general reader straight though to the postgraduate reader without all the usual jargon you get with archaeology books.
