This 224 page guide is a must have book if you wish to explore mid-Argyll, with 25 guided tours of the area. It includes walks around Kilmartin Glen, Kilmichael Glen, the rock art in Achnabreck forest and the great Dunadd hillfort.

Also featured are Carnassarie castle, a walk along the Crinan canal and even a few Nature Reserves for the non history buff, including Moine Mhor & Taynish. If you are a long distance walker there is also the option to connect all the walks together.

The foreword has been written by Professor Mick Aston, which is fun to read. This book has been carefully put together and written with clear pictures and maps to help you have a very enjoyable visit to this part of Argyll. All twenty five guided tours are clearly marked in the book and at the point of interest with notice boards all round the glen.

Don't be put off by all the information - there is a clear and easy introduction to the history of Mid-Argyll at the beginning of the book which I found a good background time-line to the history of the area and helps not to get all the dates mixed up.

Whether you want to spend a few hours taking in one tour or a week camping and taking in a few more tours this is the book for you. The only criticism I will make is that on a few of the longer walks, for example Ormaig & Kilmory Orb you should take an Ordnance Survey map as the terrain is unforgiving. This is perhaps not made clear enough in the book.

In relation to The Latest Data re Doggerland being Atlantis must we now View Megalithic Monuments Scattered throughout The British Isles Brittany Galicia etc as being The Highlands of Atlantis and Look at these Monumentuary Events Holistically with Doggerland being the epicentre?

HISTORY lies thickly layered in Kilmartin Glen. I’m standing at Nether Largie Cairn South, the oldest of the five stone mounds that once comprised a linear cemetery, a complex of burial and ritual monuments that extended the length of this flat-bottomed Argyllshire valley.

The cairn we’ve stopped at dates from approximately 3,000 BC, but harbours a stone kist or coffin installed some 1,000 years later.

The air is loud with birdsong, bluebells are emerging, fern croziers unfurling, and the Kilmartin Burn gurgles through glades of irises. On the other side of the glen, 21st-century traffic hums along the Lochgilphead-Oban road, but peer into one of these kists and you gaze through the millennia to when this valley floor was a sacred place.

    a nice point to keep in mind and imagine when walking from glebe cairn to ri cruin is that the river meandered in and out of the cairns. It was farming that re- routed the river to run alongside the road.
