DigsAn intriguing discovery of human remains dating back to the first century AD have been unearthed by Cambridgeshire County Council's Archaeological Field Unit in Hinchingbrooke.Twigden Homes commissioned the archaeologists to undertake the excavations at their new site in Huntingdon, in advance of building "The Spinney" - a development of 149 homes, which will herald the return of a resident population after 1,500 years.
One of the more unusual burials is that of a small adult male, over 20 years of age, ina very small, shallow grave. Intriguingly, the body was positioned kneeling and facing north with the upper body crouched forward and his forehead cradled in his right arm - similar to probably execution victims discovered at Sutton Hoo. Some other burials, equally fascinating, include women and children buried together in symbolic ceremonial positions.
The hilltop location reflects a desire to physically dominate the local landscape and artefacts dating back as far as the Neolithic age suggest a relatively high status of settlement throughout the history of occupation.
