Sunday 30th April, 12pm onwards, Thornborough Central Henge. Celebrate the ancient festival of Beltane at one of Britain’s most important prehistoric sacred sites.

Thornborough Henge, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, is a 5,000 year old ritual enclosure. Over a mile in length, this unique triple henge monument is astronomically aligned with the three stars of Orion's Belt.

Beltane at Thornborough Henge is an annual event at which a diverse group of people come together to celebrate the return of the sun and the beginning of the summer months.

Camping for the entire weekend is available at a choice of two beautiful locations (driving distance from the henges) starting at £3 a night. In fact, each campsite has it's own wonderful new stone circle, one finished and one still under construction!

For details of the camping, or for any other questions about the event, please contact:

Beltane at Thornborough Henge is organised by the Sacred Brigantia Trust. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with every aspect of the event. If you would like to get involved then please email us.

Was Thornborough enclosure aligned to Orion's belt when it was built 5,000 years ago?
Why are Celtic festivals held there? Don't think site was ever used by the celts who arrived some 2,500 years after it was built anyway.

The alignment of the henges almost exactly matches the variation in straight line from Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka (Orions Belt). So close I don't think there can be much doubt. We celebrate Beltain as it means a lot to all of us. It is the return of the sun and is very important in terms of agriculture. We are merely using the henges with full permission for an appropriate activity in an appropriate place. Everyone there had so much fun and there was a genuine feeling of conscious connection. Why not come along next year and see for yourself . . .

Great success. The sun has returned (literally as we started the ceremony!). 200+ smiling joyful people in a henge. Brought tears to my eyes. Many green men. Many May Queens. Dobbin lives!! I am already looking forward to next year as it gets bigger and better every year.

Thanks Oliver for organising this ancient celebration in a light hearted, thoughtful and above all fun way.

Hail Brigantes
