Rollright Stones Paint Damage
Rollright Stones Paint Damage submitted by Andy B : Close up of paint damage to one of the King's Men (Rollright Stones). Jane writes: "The photos don't show up the damage as clearly as I would like, but in some lights the paint blends in with the lichens. Every stone has at least one paint mark on it. It looks like whoever did it has used a brush and has just thrown the paint at the stones." English Heritage Conservators have visited the si... (Vote or comment on this photo)
A man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage to the 3,500-year-old Rollright Stones, near Chipping Norton, which were vandalised with yellow paint. The 26-year-old has been questioned and released on police bail until March 19.

The attack on the ancient stones caused £50,000 worth of damage on April 1, last year. A £1,000 reward was offered by the Pagan Society in a bid to find the person responsible. The stone circle, which has about 70 stones, is known as the King's Men, while another five across a field are known as the Whispering Knights. On the other side of the road is the King Stone.

They are the third most important stone circle in the country, after Stonehenge and Avebury, both in Wiltshire.

Anyone that damages our sacred stones deserves all that is coming. Personally I would arrange spell casting and magic to turn him into a stone. Then we could all take it in turns to daub him in yellow paint . . . and as for swastikas and crosses chalked and carved onto stones . . . don't get me started . . . Mike Croley your time is coming . . .

...Note.... He has not been charged, and if he is not charged on the 19th March, he probably will be released from custody. They will need evidence, they obviously haven't got much if any at the moment.

The reason it was done could be because the perpetrator was a religious fundie, Christian or Moslem.

As an Australian who visits the Uk, Scotland & Wales whenever he can, I can only say that, I hope they throw the book at him. He deserved whatever punishment he gets. We don't have the history that you guys have, so when you have to travel half way around the world to see your passion, you don't want to find them covered in Yellow Paint. I have visited the stones in question, and think they are brilliant, especially the ancient Lichen's that grow on them.

The offender should be forced to give a public explanation concerning his actions, what motivated him to do such a thing? Why would he want to destroy his own heritage...

If found guilty, I expect that he will be bound over or given community service. I'd flog him and then do the same to the creep who cuts swastikas on stones - a far worse crime!

Because he is a brainless, stupid, uneducated neandothal. They are a specific breed of idiots which are prolific, even here in Australia. You are not alone in wondering why ?????????

It will be interesting to see what motive emerges. Pure vandalism or some kind of protest. Or is it a sign to the gods like you know what elsewhere.

glad he's been caught, if proved him.

The story came from 'This is Oxfordshire', I would hazard a guess that the reporter has only heard of Stonehenge & Avebury & that his/her research went as far his/her knowledge :-)

I posted the news of an arrest on 23rd February, when it was mentioned on that night's BBC's Crimewatch. Didn't have any details then. (Entered on the comments section of my earlier article about Crimewatch investigation on Rollright Stones site page.)

More like 5,000 years old according to Burl.

Yes - I thought that was a strange thing to say. Who decides the relevant importance of stone circles? By "country" do they mean England or Britain? Never mind - brilliant news that the culprit has been caught (sorry - alleged culprit)

Yes, what a daft statement, but how about this for a topic as the next survey / poll ? Assuming Avebury and Stonehenge are 1 and 2, we could end up with a top ten of stone circles. Obviously with no real meaning or purpose to it, but just a little lighthearted diversion.

I like the idea of a poll on the importance of circles! But can we define things like "country" first please? Maybe we could do separate ones for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland?

Yes, lets run another one. I compiled a chart of this a long time ago (1998) as a side effect of collecting my original site database. It was a rundown based on how many times each site featured on a personal web page in the old days when that's what people did

    http://www.megalith.ukf.net/chart.htm

Quite a good gauge of importance I thought

Hmm, I don't think we should be propogating this southern-centric nonsense. The King's Men is a pretty average stone circle, it just happens to be in the self-important Home Counties!
