<< News >> Archaeologists Unearth Iron Age Settlement During Dig In Taunton

Submitted by coldrum on Saturday, 31 January 2009  Page Views: 2075

Iron Age and Later PrehistoryThe remains of a prehistoric Iron Age settlement have been discovered at a site in Somerset.

Archaeologists found remnants of a farm and surrounding fields with evidence of human occupation, believed to date from around 1000 BC to 400 AD, at Cambria Farm in Taunton.

Councillor Justin Robertson of Somerset County Council, who commissioned the work to clear land for a new park and ride site, said: “This is a fascinating piece of Taunton’s prehistoric heritage that provides us with a glimpse of everyday life during the Iron Age and helps to fill in the gaps in our knowledge of Somerset’s rural past.”

The finds take in a period between the late Bronze Age period and Roman times, and a full sweep of the site has been carried out with metal detectors ahead of construction work beginning next year.

Councillor Tony Shire, Portfolio Holder for Highways for the area, added: “I’m thrilled that as part of investing in the future of Taunton’s transport system, Somerset County Council has also been able to discover important information about our past.”
