I am helping to run a two day residential at Magdelene Farm in Dorset with approximately 20 students on 4th and 5th October. I wondered if you travel to centres to do workshops. I was interested in the felt making workshop for the students. Is this a possibility and if so how much would it cost. Could you email me at [email protected]. I work for Bridgwater College.

Chirgilchin with Sarymai, Ai-Churek & Stephen Kent. Music & Throat Singing. Saturday 10th July 2004, 7.30 p.m. £10 for adults and £6 for children

Tuva is located in the Tannu Mountains on the Siberian border in northwestern Mongolia. Chirgilchin, the current Tuvan national throat singing champions, are a younger-generation ensemble of masters in this extraordinary traditional vocal technique, where a singer amplifies and manipulates the overtones in their voice to produce up to three distinct, unearthly tones at one time. Chirgilchin means mirage or miracle in Tuvan. Their songs are in the Tuvan language and the group plays instruments such as the Doshpuluur - a kind of lute with two strings, the Igil - a violin with two strings, and the Dungur - a rattle drum used by the Tuvan Shamans in their rituals.

Sarymai plays traditional Altai instruments, and imitates almost all sounds of nature, animals and birds. Just one song can sound like a performance played by several actors. Innovator on the global music scene, with the ability to trigger the imagination and transport the spirit, didjeridu virtuoso and composer Stephen Kent has done more than any other musician to bring the ancient Aboriginal sound into a contemporary context. Whilst Ai-Churek is one of the most powerful and well-respected female Shamans in Tuva.

The Earthouse at Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre is an ideal venue for this unforgettable musical experience! All of the above musicians are touring the country following their appearance at 'Beyond the Border' and we are privileged and delighted to have them perform in the Earthouse.

How to purchase tickets

Entry is by ticket only, available from: East Dorset Heritage Trust, Allendale House, Hanham Road, Wimborne Minster, Dorset, BH21 1AS. Telephone 01202 888992 to confirm availability before sending a cheque payable to A.T.C. Friends Account (enclosing S.A.E.).

The Earthouse was inspired by the much larger, probably unroofed, woodhenges built around Britain (including Dorset) in Neolithic times, and in particular by three Iron Age roundhouses on the Isle of Man. It is an ideal venue for magical storytelling.

A storytelling or musical event at the Ancient Technology Centre will transport you back to a time when people gathered in round wooden buildings, around a fire. There are no signs of modern technology as only firelight and oil lamps light the Earthouse. All you will see are wooden walls and rafters, a chalk floor, firelight and the stars through the skylight.

Jake Keen designed the Earthouse because the roundhouse where he held storytelling events before was too small for the demand. As the Earthouse seats over 200 people, this is no longer a problem!
