Newgrange submitted by KenWilliams : Sunset on November 13th 2005. One of the large standing stones of The Great Circle and the entrance to the passage just visible. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A short photographic essay by Ken Williams from the Boyne Valley, Co. Meath on the 21st of December 2006. A large crowd gathered to witness the sunrise illumination of the great passage tomb at Newgrange and were rewarded with a perfect sunrise.

Later in the evening, a smaller but similarly enthusiastic group meet at Dowth Passage Tomb's southern chamber in hope of catching the elusive illumination of the chamber at sunset and, much to everyone's surprise, the old tomb obliges with a spectacular beam of orange and golden light, leaving those who witnessed it with a special warm glow on the winter solstice eve.

Thanks very much for the link to your site Ken. It's good to be able to follow these events, living the moment via your excellent photos. I believe the Winter Solstice dawn is usually sunny at Newgrange, isn't it? I tried to win sunrise access to the chamber with the Lottery a couple of times, but no luck. Had visited Newgrange in '99 and 2001. Did Knowth and Dowth in '01 too. Unfortunately neither chamber was open to public then. (I'm not even sure I should have been around the mound of Dowth that Sept. day!) Sadly my camera leaked light on that trip to Ireland, and ruined most of my precious pics. (My Lia Fail pic on the Portal is a prime example!)
