West Kennett Long Barrow  Long Barrow  England  Wiltshire  Visited  27th Apr 2024  5  5  4  A site that I had read about many times proved to be well worth the visit. On the walk up there I got to see my first Red Tailed Kite.
Farley Mount  Round Barrow(s)  England  Hampshire  Visited  1st Jan 1970  2  4  3  I have visited this many times in the past, including one visit on horseback.
Sounion Temple of Poseidon  Ancient Temple  Greece  Central Greece  Visited  12th Jun 2009  2  4  4  A beautiful place to be at sunset.
Rhyl Gorsedd Circle  Modern Stone Circle etc  Wales  Denbighshire  Visited  22nd Jun 2016  5  3  5  The site is a simple circle in good condition with easy access. I found it unusual in that it has 11 equally spaced upright stones with a 12th smaller stone placed midway between two stones. The 12th stone aligns with the centre of the circle, where there is a recumbent stone, and the diagonally opp...

Nazca Lines  Hill Figure or Geoglyph  Peru    Visited  19th Apr 2016  3  3    The Nazca Lines were viewed by aircraft, flying from Pisco Airport near Paracas. The pilot showed us all the main glyphs, often banking steeply to give us a good view. Photographs do not easily do justice to the impressive designs.
Candelabra  Hill Figure or Geoglyph  Peru    Visited  20th Apr 2016  4  4    The Candelabra is viewed by boat, in our case during a trip to the nearby Ballestas Islands. It certainly looks to me like a representation of the Southern Cross Constellation?
Sillustani necropolis  Ancient Temple  Peru    Visited  18th Apr 2016  2  4  5  A fascinating site in a beautiful location.
Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens  Ancient Palace  England  West Sussex  Visited  4th Feb 2016  2  3  5  The restoration has provided visitors with the opportunity to see a major collection of Roman mosaics.
Sacsayhuaman  Hillfort  Peru    Visited  15th Apr 2016  3  4  5  An impressive site where the sheer size of some of the stones used in its construction are incredible. The site is also the head of the Puma design incorporated in the street plan of Cusco.
Qenko  Ancient Temple  Peru    Visited  15th Apr 2016  2  3  5  An interesting site where we got to take a close look at a small temple in a natural location under the rocks.
Cusco  Ancient Village or Settlement  Peru    Visited  15th Apr 2016  3  4  5  Cusco consists of buildings and structures that are a mixture of modern, Colonial, and Inca. The most impressive example for me was the Inca "Koricancha" parts of which can still be seen in, around, and under the church and convent of Santo Domingo. The remains of Inca temple are a great opportunity...

Machu Picchu.  Ancient Village or Settlement  Peru    Visited  13th Apr 2016  3  5  5  The site is impressive because there are so many buildings where the walls are still intact, or restored. It makes it possible to imagine how the it may have looked when it was occupied. The journey in and the climb up the mountain, by bus, make it clear just how isolated Mach Picchu was when it was...

Ollantaytambo  Ancient Village or Settlement  Peru    Visited  13th Apr 2016  2  4  5  This is an impressive fortress site nestled in the Sacred Valley. The terraces and stonework are easily accessible with something of a climb up the stairs. The view and sun temple both make the climb worthwhile. The explanation from our tour guide of the 'knobs' on the large stones is that their sha...

Huaca Pucllana  Pyramid / Mastaba  Peru    Visited  11th Apr 2016  2  4  5  The site access is controlled and there is an admission fee. Exploring the site is by guided tour only with a guide, in English or Spanish at least. Although portions are damaged, or remain to be excavated, there are sufficient structures visible to be able to appreciate the pyramid and many of the ...

Port au Choix National Historic Site  Ancient Village or Settlement  Canada    Visited  18th Jun 2015  1  3  5  Although there is little to see in the way of ruins appreciating the remoteness of the site and its long history make a visit worthwhile.
L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site  Ancient Village or Settlement  Canada    Visited  21st Jun 2015  2  4  4  The site is both interesting and well presented, well worth the journey.
Museum of Anthropology - University of British Columbia  Museum  Canada    Visited  14th Feb 2015  5  5  5  On my second visit I found that the museum had improved over the years.
Ripon Cathedral  Ancient Cross  England  Yorkshire (North)  Visited  6th Apr 2015  4  5  5  A beautiful cathedral with the Saxon Crypt and the library on the upper floor being the most interesting from my perspective.
Devil's Arrows  Stone Row / Alignment  England  Yorkshire (North)  Visited  4th Apr 2015  3  3  4  The stones are easily accessed with two standing in a field still in use and the third just across the road. The close alignment is clearly visible. Worth the visit.
Old Sarum  Hillfort  England  Wiltshire  Visited    3  3  4  I recall visiting this many years ago as a young man. I particularly remember the remnants of Bishop Roger's Cathedral.
Charles De Gaulle Obelisk  Modern Stone Circle etc  Canada    Visited  8th Nov 2014  5  3  5
Whispering Knights  Portal Tomb  England  Oxfordshire  Visited  22nd Sep 2014  3  5  3  An interesting site in itself it is made more interesting because of its relationship to the Rollright Stones themselves. A little trivia: The "latin" inscription on the nearby bench reads "ORE STABIT FORTIS ARARE PLACET ORE STAT" but a Google search reveals that it is really "O rest a bit for 't...

King Stone at the Rollrights  Standing Stone (Menhir)  England  Oxfordshire  Visited  22nd Sep 2014  3  4  3  Although separated from the Rollright Stones it does hold the highest spot on the local terrain.
Rollright Stones  Stone Circle  England  Oxfordshire  Visited  22nd Sep 2014  3  5  4  The stones are stunning because of their somewhat unusual appearance. The circle still presents a good sense of the importance of the site. We visited the day after the Druid celebration of the autumn equinox. A labyrinth had been laid using bird seed and it served very well in identifying the main ...

Mottistone Common Bowl Barrow  Round Barrow(s)  England  Isle of Wight  Visited  10th Sep 2014  2  5  3  Although the seasonal coverage prevented a good view of the mound the panorama was excellent with the hills opening up to the sea. It is very easy to see the value of this site from here.
Long Stone (IOW)  Standing Stone (Menhir)  England  Isle of Wight  Visited  10th Sep 2014  3  4  3  It was well worth the walk up the hill to see the stones and their view of the surrounding countryside.

Kerlescan Alignements  Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue  France  Bretagne:Morbihan (56)  Visited  16th Sep 2013  4  4  3  These alignments show converging lines which distinguishes them from the other main alignments. The ability to experiment and build on this scale is still hard to appreciate today.
Ménec alignements  Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue  France  Bretagne:Morbihan (56)  Visited  16th Sep 2013  4  4  3  These alignments have many of the larger stones in this complex. It is hard to imagine the level of commitment required to establish this site. My only regret is that we visited in September when direct access to walk among the stones is not available, at this alignment and others.
Kermario Alignements  Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue  France  Bretagne:Morbihan (56)  Visited  16th Sep 2013  4  4  3  The sheer scale of the site and the number of stones is incredible.
Ménec cromlech  Stone Circle  France  Bretagne:Morbihan (56)  Visited  16th Sep 2013  3  5  5  The cromlech and the way the village has grown in and around it reminded me very much of Avebury in England. It was fascinating to walk around the village and to discover stones in all sorts of places.
Teotihuacan - Pyramid of the Moon  Pyramid / Mastaba  Mexico  Estado de Mexico  Visited  6th Feb 2010  4  5  4  This pyramid give a tremendous view along the so called Street of the Dead. Although access only allows you to climb part way to the summit it is enough appreciate the whole complex.
Teotihuacan - Temple of Quetzalcoatl  Pyramid / Mastaba  Mexico  Estado de Mexico  Visited  6th Feb 2010  4  5  4  This pyramid is most notable for the features that adorn it.
Teotihuacan - Pyramid of the Sun  Pyramid / Mastaba  Mexico  Estado de Mexico  Visited  6th Feb 2010  4  5  4  The Pyramid of the Sun is just overwhelming in its majesty and simplicity.
Tenochtitlan - Templo Mayor  Ancient Temple  Mexico  Estado de Mexico  Visited  16th Aug 2011  3  4  5  Having already visited the amazing site of Teotihuacan I was equally pleased with the detail that could be seen in this temple and the informative adjoining museum. Situated in Mexico City the access is easy for anyone who has some time.
America's Stonehenge  Ancient Village or Settlement  United States  New England  Visited  6th Jul 2012  3  4  3  Understanding that this Stonehenge was unlikely to have the grandeur of the more famous cousin in Wiltshire, England we chose to arrange a visit anyway. The remaining building structures and stones clearly show a long history and knowledge of significant solar events during the year. The fact that m...

Castlerigg  Stone Circle  England  Cumbria  Visited  10th Sep 2013  4  5  5  Although I had visited the Lake District many times over the years this was my first visit to this incredible stone circle. The stone circle in itself is well maintained. Once on site the special location with the surrounding circle of mountain peaks make it easy to understand why this location was ...

Stonehenge.  Stone Circle  England  Wiltshire  Visited  30th Jun 2008  4  4  4  Easily recognized by just about anyone I was always impressed to see the structure at close range. As a young boy growing up less than an hour from the site I recall still being able to walk through the remaining stones. The vast amount of work done over the years, and continuing today, to unders...

Parthenon  Ancient Temple  Greece  Central Greece  Visited  10th Jun 2009  3  5  3  In addition to the building being a classic worldwide symbol it is particularly breathtaking in its hill top location. Despite the work being done to restore much of the structure it is still possible to feel the grandeur of the past.
Avebury  Stone Circle  England  Wiltshire  Visited  15th May 2000  4  5  5  The integration of the village into the superb stone circle is in part a distraction and yet a wonder in itself. The site is impressive both on its own and as a part of the many sites in this area of Wiltshire. The ability to walk through the stones and experience the location gives it some advan...

Silbury Hill  Artificial Mound  England  Wiltshire  Visited  15th May 2000  4  4    The hill is impressive when seen from the road but I did not have the opportunity to determine if it was possible to get closer. The potential linkages of this structure with the sites in the area are not easy to understand. The effort put into the construction makes it clear that it held particular...

Carcassonne - La Cité  Ancient Village or Settlement  France  Languedoc:Aude (11)  Visited  31st Jan 1999  4  5  5  Carcassonne is an impressive fortress with many interesting areas to visit. The history of the region is reflected in many places, including the Abbey. My time there was limited and I would go back to see more if the opportunity were to arise.
Beijing Ancient Observatory  Museum  China    Visited  10th Apr 2013  4  4  5  The photographs were taken during my visit in April 2013 on a grey day which did not necessarily do justice to some of the exhibits and I was using my iPod which does not do well with high contrast.
Teotihuacan  Ancient Village or Settlement  Mexico    Visited  6th Feb 2010  4  5  5  The scale of the structures leave you in complete wonder at they must have looked like in their day. It was well worth the slow journey out of Mexico City in the heavy traffic.
Museo Nacional de Antropología  Museum  Mexico  Mexico Other  Visited  7th Feb 2010  5  5  5  An excellent museum with many artifacts well displayed. I was particularly impressed by the size of the famous Aztec Calendar Stone. Despite only having a couple of hours I saw most of the museum and took many photographs. As I left I had the opportunity to enjoy a display of Native Pole Flyers.
