The oldest recorded presence of human beings in Asturias goes back to the Lower Paleolithic, specifically to the interglacial Riss-Würm period 100.000 years ago. Bifacial artifacts and Hand axes have been found in open-air settlements both in coastal areas and interior valleys close to rivers, deserving especial mention the Acheulean findings at Bañugues (Gozón) being the oldest of the county.
Transition from open-air to cave settlements takes place 80.000 years ago with the arrival of the Würm glacial period. This transition marks the beginning of the Middle Paleolithic of which several materials remain, including Mousterian spear heads, axes, adzes, etc… The “Cueva del Conde” in Santo Adriano is the most representative site of this era.
The Upper Paleolithic in Asturias comes 35.000 years ago in the midst of an extremely cold climate. Human settlements take place deep within caverns in the eastern and central parts of the county, rich in karstic phenomena, of which deserve mention the sites of “Cueto de la Mina” (Llanes), “Tito Bustillo” (Ribadesella) and “Cueva del Buxu” (Cangas de Onís). Findings to date include human remains and several artifacts like silex points, javelins, bone harpoons, collars, etc… Neanderthal people have disappeared in the Upper Paleolithic and only Homo Sapiens-Sapiens populates the area. These people know fire and are hunters at first and hunter-gatherers later on. Of this era impressive cave-art examples remain, depicting animal figures with incredible precision.
8.000 years BC the last glacial period ends and the ecosystem changes radically giving way the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. Parietal art all but disappears in the Azilean period and settlements move again to the outside. Lithic findings in the “Cueva de los Azules” necropolis (Cangas de Onís) has helped us to better understand this time frame.
The Neolithic comes to the county in the 4th millennium BC, and megaliths start to appear in Asturias. Many dolmens, - of which the ones at “Merillés” (Tineo) and “Llaguna de Niévares” (Villaviciosa) deserve mention, - and uncountable tumuli (more than 600 have been catalogued so far) can be found in the region. Numerous mines are located and exploited in the area, a trade that will endures until today.
Neolithic and Bronze age coexist for a while in Asturias, with the latter lasting until 600 BC. Remains from this era include bonze sickles, axes, knives and short swords together with the tools required to produce them. Also from the Bronze Age are the many golden items found which reflect the influence of the Mediterranean cultures (pendants and collars with detailed filigree) and the Continental ones (torques).
The Iron Age in Asturias is referred in many texts as the “Cultura Castreña”, taking its name from the “Castro”; the typical fortified dwelling of these people, of which more than 300 examples have been found. This age starts as far back as the 8th Century BC to the 2nd Century AD. There is no general agreement about the origin of the first Asturian Iron Age settlers, but most authors attribute the Cultura Castreña to the Celts.
The Roman conquest in the 1st Century AD brings the end of the prehistoric times to Asturias. With the last Castro assumed to have been reluctantly abandoned by last descendants of the ancient Asturians in the 3rd Century AD.
