The "Castro de Coaña" is the best known (and probably most over-restored) castro in the Asturias province of Spain.
It is easily reached from a fork in the N634 just west of Navia. Simply follow the many signposts from this point to the actual site (5-6 Km).
It has a very good visitors centre (not found very often in Spain) which will give you a very nice outline on the "Castreña" culture and provide you several examples in the area. Well worth a visit (though there is no relevant merchandising to speak of :-) ).
Visits to the place are somewhat restricted. A small fee is charged to finance the keeping and ongoing excavation of the site (Wednesdays are free, though). Watch out, as the site is closed on Mondays.
The Castro itself is very beautiful to behold (a bit over-restored for my taste) allowing you to get a very clear picture of the structure. About 60% of the whole Castro is excavated and several carved stones including a big water basin have been found.
Current configuration has been dated to the celt-roman era, around S.I AD, though the settlement is believed to have existed from the early iron age.
Asturias features many castros throughout the province, specially in the western area where a lot of ancient mining sites (mainly Carbon, though copper and gold are also found) have been located. One good example of such sites can be found in the "Puerto del Palo" near to the village of Pola de Allande.
