Anne T visited on 9th Apr 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Three Howes Rigg (East), Smeathorns Road, North Yorkshire: Having stopped at White Cross and Three Howes Rigg (West) first, and having 'got our eye in', these barrows rise from the surrounding ground on access land. On the eastern side of Smeathorns Road, and clearly visible on UK Grid Finder, tramping across the heather moorland was easy on the feet. Now largely used to feed the grouse (full feeding dishes on the tops of these barrows), they diminish in height from the north to the south. There is a fourth mound to the east of the middle barrow, but this looks more like a farmer's spoil heap rather than a barrow, and I couldn't find any reference to it on Pastscape or Historic England. Looking at the map, there are so many barrows, crosses and other features around here, I'd like to spend more time in this area.

Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)

Despite being called 'The Three Howes', there are five round barrows in this group - three on the eastern side of Smeathorns Road, and two on the western.

The three on the east are all scheduled separately, see Historic England List Entry 1018766, 1020348 and 1018767.  They lie 310, 450 and 500 metres south east of White Cross, which sits at the junction of Smeathorns Road with the minor road leading west to Commondale village.

The largest, and most prominent, round barrow is the northern-most, sited at NZ 68120 10521. The HE entry tells us: "It survives as a mound 21m in diameter standing 1.8m high on level ground. The side of the mound has a step or berm 0.4m above the surrounding ground surface all around the mound except for the southern side. This berm is at its widest on the northern side where it is 3m wide. On the top of the mound there is a 0.5m deep depression 3m in diameter at the base and 5m in diameter at the top."

The second, middle, barrow sited at NZ 68143 10370, is 150 metres to the south, and is "16m diameter mound sited on level ground, standing 0.75m high with an irregular depression up to 0.4m deep at its centre."

The third is less visible, sited at NZ 68145 10317, is 50 metres to the south of the middle barrow and is 16 metres in diameter, 0.4 metres high, with a slight depression in the middle.

Three Howes Rigg (East)
Three Howes Rigg (East) submitted by Anne T : The southern-most barrow is barely visible amongst the heather, standing at only 0.4 metres high. It becomes much more visible as you walk up to it and see the slight central depression, filled with grass rather than heather. NZ 68145 10317. (Vote or comment on this photo)
