Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor)
Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor) submitted by johndhunter : Cheshire Stone at NZ 57729 02118 – Viewed looking southerly down Bilsdale, May 2015. Urra Farm is extreme right in image just below centre. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The largest of a group of sandstone boulders located at the top of the scarp on the north western edge of Urra Moor. It has impressive views of upper Bilsdale and well worth the slight detour (through the bracken in summer) from the main track which runs close by. As to why a stone in North York Yorkshire should be called the Cheshire Stone I have no idea but it is marked as such on all old OS maps.

A natural basin has been formed by erosion at the north western edge of the stone on its flat top. I have seen quite a few such basins on other stones /outcrops in the surrounding areas. According to this BLOG such basins are often associated with local folklore though he says he knows of none for this stone.

Nearby the very northern end of the old jet workings below the Cheshire stone, marked as Tips (disused) on the modern map, microliths from the Mesolithic were found by R. Close* in 1956 this is Monument 27389. R.H. Hayes* also found flints on the top of Carr Ridge just to the east of this, see Monument 27421

*Roland Close (1908 – 1978) and Raymond Hayes (1909 – 2000) were well respected local amateur archaeologists. Close was an estate worker by profession and lived in Baysdale. Hayes was a photographer, though also worked as a postman to supplement his income and lived in Hutton Le Hole. Hayes who was also the local correspondent for the Ordnance Survey published many papers on his finds. He was awarded the MBE in 1966 and elected FSA (Fellow, Society of Antiquarians) in 1976

Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor) submitted by johndhunter : Cheshire Stone at NZ 57729 02118 - Viewed looking northerly towards Hagg’s Gate and the Tees Valley lowlands beyond, May 2015. Hagg’s Gate is the high point of the gap between Hasty Bank and Carr Ridge, however it is more commonly known today as the “Top of Clay Bank” and is where the main route out of northern Bilsdale begins its descent to the Tees Valley lowlands.
