The inset box shows the symbol (nested rectangles with a disc at three of the corners) and the arrow points to where it was engraved on the stone's NE face. Rode my horse up there and saw the stones today following hounds in driving snow. Felt primeval.

The auquhollie Lang stane is in a location I think well worth a good explore. I encountered a stone circle up on the hill nearby, but couldn't find any other information online about it, other than it is bronze age. The Lang stane and the circle can be accessed vis some tracks across the Elswick Mounth hills, which can be reached through the Ury Estate and some fields on from there. It's a roughly four and half hour round trip from the edge of stonehaven. It makes for a rugged and special walk. I encountered the standing stone by accident, and was overjoyed. there seems like a lot of history in that area, including. A road used by Picts and Romans. The Romans built a huge camp there. I wish I could find more information, though it's written in the landscape, and that's enjoyable. :-)

Here I sit, in western Tennessee, USA, reading and perusing the 'todays' pix vs Lockyer's pix of 1907 and marvelling at the great care and concern you have of these ancient sites and how easy it is today to 'see' and enjoy the places that our ancestors came from. (Actually, a little further south, Lanarkshire)
These photos hlep to bring to life the places of direction and worship of the past; AND to understand that 'they' knew a lot about the sky way before the Catholic church, Copernicus, and even Halley 'discovered' them. Let's hear it for the Druids, celts or whomever.
By the way, I'm hoping Auquhollie is the same as Lockyer's Auchquhorties, the pix look the same.
