Loanhead Of Daviot
Loanhead Of Daviot submitted by Suncircle49 : 19/06/2019 08.41: A beautiful sunny morning, perfect for flying a drone. The aerial photos showed clearly the shadow in the slit of the recumbent, ending midway along its length. However, what was interesting was the shadows of the standing stones which touched the inner ring of the RSC. The next morning at Easter Aquhorthies I saw similar shadows. Constructed sometime around 2500 B.C., Loanhead of Daviot is a recumbent stone circle comprised of a large recumbent stone, two stones flanking the recumbent stone, and eight other stones in a circle that is 67 feet in diameter. In the middle of the low Bronze Age cairn within the circle is a rectangular mortuary pit, which may be the oldest part of the site.

Nearby is a circular cremation cemetery, which was in use about 1500 B.C. Found were a number of cremated remains of adults and infants.

Loanhead of Daviot submitted by hamilton : This winter photograph of the Loanhead of Daviot stone circle was achieved after negotiating deep snow in early December 2010, passing no fewer than four tractors snowploughing a route through Daviot. Loanhead Of Daviot submitted by Suncircle49 : Midsummer 2018: A beautiful sunny morning, I had come prepared, checking the structure of the recumbent, and the flankers shadows. Very interesting to see close up the carved slit of the recumbent, and the shadow cast into the slit by the smallest ever east flanker. A very unique design.

Loanhead Of Daviot
Loanhead Of Daviot submitted by Umbra-man : 19 Jun 18. Another from Daviot taken at MSS sunrise. This is stone 11, which is the first stone to the left of the recumbent and flankers, as viewed from inside the circle. The cupmarks are on the RH side of the stone, and halfway up. There are other markings on the stone, suggestions welcomed.

Loanhead Of Daviot submitted by Umbra-man : 19 Jun 18. Midsumme Solstice sunrise. Stone 7 with cup marks. Processed in B and W to bring out some detail. Daviot like many stone circles, is "partially-sighted" due to the proximity of trees blocking out the local Southern Horizon. Thus their relationship with the sun and moon, in relation to the local horizon, is much diminished.... which is a shame.

Notes from my visit October 2016

Travel north from Inverurie to visit the Loanhead Of Daviot stone circle, which is located around the back of a scout hut with plenty of parking space. The circle has plenty of open space around it, although it is largely surrounded by woodland, and there are signboards explaining things.

The circle has been excavated in the past and is now well presented and kept tidy, the outer circle of large stones almost completely filled with a covering of small stones, presumably the remains of a cairn.

Just beside the main circle is the remains of another "cremation circle". Despite all the good things going for this place, it didn't give me any good feelings.

Does the car-park sign count? The circle itself is hidden behind the trees a short walk away.

In the middle of the low Bronze Age cairn within the circle is a rectangular mortuary pit, which some report may be the oldest part of the site. Mystery at Loanhead of Daviot by Anonymous on Wednesday, 19 July 2006
We visited the Loanhead of Daviot stone circle on the 5th July 2006 at approx 7.30 in the evening with relatives on holiday from the USA. As we walked up from the car park through the wood we were met with the strange sight of a figure in the middle of the circle with a black hooded cloak on backwards with another hood on the right way. The figures face was covered by the hood and the rest of his body, for we thought it was a male, was totally covered too, althought he was wearing a pair of nike trainers!!

A circle had been drawn in the earth and there were symbols also drawn in the earth on the outside of the circle. As we walked round the stones we kept quiet, we figured it was his business what he was doing and respected this. But it was an erie experience for our visitors and something they will talk about for years to come.

I visited the site on 18th March 2005, it was quite easy to find and you're not restricted by fences as you are at Easter Aquorthies nearby. I've uploaded a collection of photographs here I couldn't find the collection of 12 cup marks mentioned on the information board at the site and on several websites.

The massive recumbent has been split vertically straight through the middle. This was caused by water seeping in and when it froze, the stone was split.
