Maiden Stone (Aberdeenshire)
Maiden Stone (Aberdeenshire) submitted by bobs : Nice view of the back face of this Pictish symbol stone showing (from top) centaur .. notched rectangle .. Pictish Beast .. Mirror and Comb. Grid Ref: NJ703247 (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Maiden Stone is a roughly 10 foot tall Pictish symbol stone carved in red granite from the 9th century A.D. with relief carvings of a cross on one side and symbols on the other.

The cross is surmounted by a man between two fish monsters, while there is a large disc below the cross. On the reverse, the slab bears a variety of Pictish symbols: a centaur-like figure, a notched-rectangle and Z-rod (chariot), a beast, and a mirror and double-sided comb. According to legend, the name 'Maiden Stone' refers to a daughter of a laird (lord) who was turned to stone on her wedding day after losing a bet with the devil.

This Pictish Symbol Stone is recorded as Canmore ID 18978, which includes photographs, drawings, digital files and a description. Canmore ID 19005 also records an ornamented stone ball found here in 1896, which is now in Inverurie Museum (Accession No. AS 1/PEHMS: 1 1092).

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for The Maiden Stone, Chapel Of Garioch, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, which includes directions for finding this stone, drawings of the carvings, descriptions, and a list of reference sources for more information.

This is a shot of the Maiden Stone, Aberdeenshire class II Pictish symbol stone taken very early in the morning with a low sun lighting up the stone, picking out the intricacies of the carved symbols on the granite megalith. About 100m west of this stone stands another stone maiden - a giant statue of Persephone, holding a mirror in reference to the Maiden Stone.
Walk 100 yards down the road and look into the woods on your right, you will see this beautiful white figure standing lost and neglected among the trees.
