Glassel submitted by hamish : This is a delight, I didn't read the description by Cosmic so got quite lost. I found an old railway track and scaled the enbankment with the help of saplings and eventually found it. The lighting was perfect. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Stone Circle in Aberdeenshire. The Aberdeenshire Guide notes that "This circle has been described as transitional in form between the Recumbent Stone Circles and the Four posters such as the Templestone" whilst the OS label it as Standing Stones but Burl has it as a Stone Circle.

This stone circle is oval in plan, 5.5 m by 2.8 m and has 5 stones of reddish granite ranging in height from 0.84 m to 0.99 m, the tallest at the SW. A boulder of diorite lies 3 m to the S of these stones. The circle lies on edge of a natural embankment to the West and would have good views to south and west but for the trees. Access is opposite the private road to Glassel House along track through trees for 50 m. then at boulder take small path going South.

Glassel submitted by golux : Had to climb over lots of felled and fallen trees to get here (in October 2010). If they are all removed then the circle will be left standing on the edge of a large (c.100 yards diameter) clearing, - which will make it a lot easier to find. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Found these stones in a clearing in the woods. Not very big standing stones.
Follow the path opposite the main entrance to Glassel House for about 50 metres then cut through the forest on your left hand side.
Watch out, it's treacherous underfoot- risk of falling/tripping on fallen branches and trees!

Photos in the canmore database show this circle in 1902 with the fallen W stone, as it is today, and then in 1903 with the stone re-erected. The present layout looks the same as it was before this change; I wonder when the W stone was put back in the horizontal and why?

Went to the circle today and while I found the stones to be worth the look, the area around the stones is now covered in felled trees and is very difficult to find and get to. I would suggest that a person going there turn left/south about 20 feet before the stone wall and carefully climb through 150 yards worth of fallen trees then turn right/west and go about 50 yards to the clearing beyond the lumber. The stones were not damaged due to the tree cutting, but one could easily miss them.
