Recumbent Stone Circle in Aberdeenshire

Additional information supplied by Drew Parsons in September 2012: This recumbent stone circle dates from the Bronze Age. It is 17 metres in diameter and has a huge 4.5 metre long 20 ton recumbent stone flanked by two tall standing stones which interestingly curve or bend towards it. One stone appears to have been re-erected and the whole site landscaped to its present format which erased the burial cairn which once stood in the circle. Nevertheless, located in the churchyard at Midmar Kirk it is in a beautiful setting. Reference: Canmore: http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/18001/details/midmar+kirk/

Midmar Kirk S submitted by TheCaptain : What a fabulous site, the circle standing in the churchyard of Midmar Kirk, gravestones all around it but none placed within. Nicely looked after, this has become something of a favourite. (1 comment)

Midmar Kirk S
Midmar Kirk S submitted by Umbra-man : 10 Jul 18. Behind the recumbent I found this stone lodged into the bottom right corner. It is hand sized, weighs around a Kg, and seems to me, to be a very obvious cup of some sort. I would be interested if anyone else has found this, or what its purpose may have been.

Midmar Kirk S
Midmar Kirk S submitted by Umbra-man : 10 Jul 18. I took a series of pictures during an overcast/flat light afternoon. Whilst there I noticed several of the stones had very significant grooves/channels cut into them. I have processed the pictures in black and white, as this improves the contrast. Interesting to speculate on the purpose/how/why the grooves were cut.
