Stews submitted by Jackanol : Stews standing stone I've only added this rather poor image as there wasn''t one. The coastal path is rather stunning - there were fulmars flying below us - but we couldn''t access the stone from it, being several fields away plus guarded by inquisitive cows. Sadly we failed this, due to a combination of both cows and bog, probably the coastal path is not the best approach. Image copyright: jac... (Vote or comment on this photo)

RCAHMS NMRS record no. ND48NE 1 at ND46568900 sits on a ridge near a pre-Reformation kirk and is the site of a "triangular monument" seen by Low in passing Stouse [sic] head, by which time two of the stones were already stumps, these later disappearing entirely. They were smaller in cross-section than the main stone and lined up N/S. His drawing has a compass point whivh points down, so taking that as N the stumps were to the E of the N/S aligned main stone. This is a tapered red sandstone block a couple of yards in height and 2'6" by 12-13" at the base. I guess George Marwick would have called it a Starra Kirk stone.
