Lower Piles

Cairn with retaining kerb and with cist in Devon

These are marked on the OS map as a pair of cairns, The Higher South East one is a Cairn Circle and cist, The lower North West is a Cairn.

Update November 2019: This cairn and cist are featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Lower Piles Ring Setting Cairn and Cist and the The Neolithic tombs of Cuckoo Ball & Corringdon Ball.

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 442339, as MDV4256 (Cist and retaining kerb south-east of Lower Piles), and scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1013101(Cist and retaining kerb south-east of Lower Piles).

Condition|Ambience|Access in my opinion is 354. 5 for ambience is subjective but then again it's out of the way on Dartmoor with magnificent views and you are very likely to be the only one there leaving you free to ponder whatever you like for as long as you want :)
