Glasscombe Ball North
Glasscombe Ball North submitted by thecaptain : Glasscombe Ball stone row, Dartmoor, Devon SX657604 The remains of this row would have started at a cairn on top of the ridge and progressed in a south-easterly direction away from it. With all the stones flattened to the ground, the layout of the original row is not easy to determine, but would have been at least 80 metres in length. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The remains of this row can be found at the top of the ridge on the saddle between Glasscombe Ball and Piles Hill just to the east of the old tramway.

The stones are fairly large, but not a single one is still standing. The row would have started at a cairn on top of the ridge and progressed in a south-easterly direction away from it. With all the stones flattened to the ground, the layout of the original row is not easy to determine, but would have been at least 80 metres in length. There is no obvious western end to be found, the tramway cuts across the row here, but I could see no more obvious stones beyond that. The remains of the cairn are well knocked about, but it can still be seen standing out against the skyline from the trackway.

I didn’t have long to look about here, as there was a large herd of cattle crossing the moor at this point while I was there on solstice eve, many of which were bullocks which seemed to take a dislike to my presence, and sort of herded me away !

Update October 2019: This stone row is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Glasscombe Ball N. Stone Row, which tells us: "(this is) a stone row extending between two cairns. The north-east cairn is 0.6m high and is now elongated north-west to south-east to 6.0m. by 4.0m, and is turf-covered. The south-west cairn, 4.0m. in diameter and 0.8m. high is of close-packed stones and turf-covered". Also see their entry for the The stone rows of Butterdon Hill, Piles Hill & Glasscombe

The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 441946 and as MDV5659 (Stone row on Ugborough Moor, near Glasscombe Ball). The row is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1017610 (Stone alignment and two cairns to the north-west of Glasscombe Ball).

This stone row is also included in the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Glasscombe Ball, North, which includes a description, photographs of the alignment and the individual stones, a plan of the row with its associated cairns, access information plus links to other online resources for more information. The SRoGB also includes a section for 'Landscape Comments', which discusses and illustrates the 'slivers of sea' views and the promontories visible from the row.

Glasscombe Ball North (South Cairn)
Glasscombe Ball North (South Cairn) submitted by SandyG : Every single stone within the Glasscombe Ball, North alignment is recumbent. This implies that the stones have been systematically felled or were poorly erected in the first place. View from the north east (Scale 1m), showing the cairn at the south eastern end of the row. Glasscombe Ball North
Glasscombe Ball North submitted by SandyG : A line of prostrate granite slabs protruding through dead molinia does not offer a great photographic opportunity. One day I will return with my pole and see if I can improve on this offering. The fact that no stones remain standing strongly supports the idea that they have been deliberately felled. View from the north east with the terminal cairn on the skyline. (Vote or comment on this photo)
