Round Barrow on Butterdon Hill, Dartmoor, Devon, associated with nearby stone row.

Large cairn just beside the Butterdon Hill stone row, at the point where the row changes direction as it drops over the edge of the ridge, and at what is the crest of the hill when seen from the north. It is possible that it was once surrounded by a ring of stones, but this cairn has been much altered over the years.

Update October 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Hangershell Rock (East of) Cairn, which tells us: "(this is a) large cairn with hollow centre. Diameter 17m, height 1.2m".

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 441155 and as MDV3124 (Cairn to the east of Hangershell Rock, Ugborough) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER. This site is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1013090 (Cairn to the east of Hangershell Rock).

Butterdon Hill Barrow
Butterdon Hill Barrow submitted by Bladup : Butterdon Hill Barrow with Large recumbent stone in the foreground, It looks to me like a terminal stone of a stone row, As this massive row was very clearly built in stages and not all at once. Therefore this barrow which is now in the middle of a row would once have been to the side of the end of the row before it was added to, and by doing so putting it in the middle and not at the end anymore,...
