Carneddau Hengwm
Carneddau Hengwm submitted by JohnnyP : Northern Cairn Described on Coflein as denuded long cairn, 52m E-W by 17m, within which are set an uncertain number of chambered features, some of which appear to have retained their capstones. This is looking to SW. North Cairn just visible left hand edge. (Vote or comment on this photo)
In the hills above the Merioneth Coast two long cairns stand to the north and south, both of which have been badly damaged. The northern cairn which is more ruinous is the smaller and has 2 burial chambers and a large capstone at the western end.

The southern cairn is much larger and better preserved. In the centre is a collapsed Portal Dolmen with a dry-stone wall passage leading in from the north. The Dolmen was described by an antiquarian called Pennant before it collapsed:

“a great cromlech altar composed of two sloping stones placed over the edge of the other upon five flat upright stones seven feet high in one part and four feet, ten inches in the lowest.”

To the south lie the closing slab and two capstones under which is another stone presumed to be the back stone of the chamber.

This characteristic dates the tomb to later than its southern neighbour which started out as a portal dolmen, later enlarged. This view looks to the NW.

Visiting Carneddau Hengwm by TimPrevett on Friday, 21 September 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
This really is a great place to visit, but preparation and the right gear are needed, as well as sympathetic weather and a 1:25000 map. We parked near the Cors y Gedol dolmen, and did an 8 hour circuit up to the pass, along the ridge, and looping around the southern slopes of Moelfre. A demanding walk, but really worth it. There were several more sites we could have taken in, but we did loads as it was; daylight and tiredness dictated we finished where we did. Much more to see on another visit!
