TheCaptain visited on 20th Sep 2021 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 2 Day down to Dartmoor for a pilgrimmage to Beardown Man. From Beardown Cairn, and now back on the planned route but behind time, I see another chap out on the moor nearby, an old looking chap dressed in what looks like tweeds, and we exchange greetings. Head north towards Crow Tor, crossing a wall and small stream. Looking for the cairn below Crow Tor which is not marked on the map, and having an initial look where I think it is, I again resort to gps and there it is about 20 metres away. A lovely stone cairn with a fairly large cist inside, the capstones shifted off to one side. Up to Crow Tor to find somewhere to sit and have lunch, during which time a couple walking the other direction pass by and we exchange waves. I now head north across the featureless boggy high moorland to Rough Tor, with firing range huts, double checking it is the right one a couple of times!

Crow Tor

A kerbed cairn and cist on Dartmoor. The cairn consists of a stony, turf-covered mound, and measures 4.5m in diameter and 0.45m in height. There are traces of a retaining kerb of leaning, granite slabs to the northeast and south. The cist is set slightly to the north of the centre of the cairn.

It is trapezoidal in shape, and measures 0.65m and 0.95m in length, 0.8m in width, and 0.5m in depth. The cover-stone, which is 0.9m long, 0.5m wide and 0.2m thick, is displaced and lies just to the south east of the cist." Source: Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks: Crow Tor Platform Cairn Circle and Cist.

Further information can be found on Pastscape, Monument Number 442724, which says this "kerbed cairn and cist is located at the edge of a clitter field to the south west of Crow Tor on a gentle, south west-facing slope." Strangely, their notes record that in 1978 no cist could be found in this area, although in 1994 and 1999 field investigators reported that the cairn and cist are in a stable condition in an area of short grass.

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV12954 date the cist and round cairn from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000BC to 701BC). It is a scheduled monument - see Historic England List ID 1016922 (Round cairn and cist on the south west side of Crow Tor) and sits 160 metres south-west of Crow Tor.

Archaeologists may not have been able to locate the cist/cairn (excusable enough, it's not much to look at) but Crow Tor is striking. Do you think Crow is a version of one of the many words for 'rock' or does it refer to a, presumably man-made, site for crows? They are certainly useful birds, megalithically speaking!
