Chittaford Down cairn circle and cist
Chittaford Down cairn circle and cist submitted by davep : The Chittaford Down Platform Cairn Circle from Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chittaford Down cairn circle and cist has a diameter of 8.0m and a height of 0.6m, with seven stones of a peristalith protruding through the turf. There is a central cist oriented north west/south east consisting of two-side stones and two end-stones.

The cist measures 1.3m x 0.5m. internally and is 0.65m deep.

The Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website includes information about the Chittaford Down Platform Cairn Circle at grid reference SX 63502 79203.

Further details for this cairn and cist can be found in the Pastscape Record for this site, Monument Number 442519. The cairn is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1021329 (Cairn 190m west of Archerton), which tells us the cairn overlooks the valley of the East Dart River, adding: "(the cairn) survives as an oval mound standing up to 0.6m high and measuring 6.8m north west-south east by 5.2m north east-south west. The periphery of the mound is denoted in places by edge set stones denoting the survival of a kerb. A further edge stone within the interior of the mound may represent the remnants of a cist. In the centre and towards the western side of the cairn is an irregular shaped hollow representing the site of a partial early excavation".

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER, HER number MDV5832, dates the site from the Early Neolithic to Late Bronze Age - 4000 BC to 701 BC.
