Ffyst Samson neolithic chamber is also known as Trellys, St. Nicholas. It is bizarre in appearance, consisting of a capstone apparently delicately balanced on just two tall pointed supporting stones. Although difficult to reach, the effort required is worthwhile.

Ffyst Samson submitted by Horatio : Looks so precarious that capstone, infact the whole structure looks so rickety that I'm surprised it's still standing. Great views from the crag behind looking out over Ffyst Samson towards the sea. I recommend making the trek to this chambered tomb as it is a great site and sight. Ffyst Samson
Ffyst Samson submitted by Horatio : This tomb is worth every ounce of effort to get too, not that it requires much in energy just a bit of (good) route finding, something (for some reason) I was ashamedly lacking today. Any way the secret is is to head for the outcrop and you'll come across the chamber which isn't visible 'til well on the way to the outcrop, as the chamber can be obscured by gorse. Actually great views form the ou... (3 comments)

Ffyst Samson submitted by pab : With kind permission from my accompanying 5ft marker, this photo gives a good idea of the scale of this structure, which stands on an exceptionally exposed stretch of hillside.

Ffyst Samson
Ffyst Samson submitted by pab : Looking under Ffyst Samson out towards the Irish Sea. This photo shows just how massive the capstone is. Combined with there being only 2 uprights with very limited contact with the capstone they support, the whole thing manages to look very strange!

Ffyst Samson
Ffyst Samson submitted by Horatio : The chamber looking from East, it doesn't really show it from this view how that capstone defies gravity. This is well worth the small walk and a little hunting around (if it's your first time) to find this chamber. The rewards are great.

Ffyst Samson
Ffyst Samson submitted by Horatio : Side view of the tomb, it looks like that far orthostat has seen some damage on its leading edge but has been present for several years looking back at everyone else's images.

We are the landowner.

The easiest access is as follows:
1) Park at SM905354 (not obstructing the lane please!)
2) Walk up the lane, turning right after a few hundred yards over a cattle grid onto a tarmac road.
3) After cresting the summit, go through the farm gate in the fence, 100m on your right.
4) Follow the contour round to the right (north) of the hill, passing under the water tank
5) Keep going, passing to the right of the crag. The Cromlech is in the far corner of the field.

If you want to stick to the footpath as marked, then walk between the two cottages and then turn right and walk in front of the farmhouse, towards a farm gate. The path uphill is pretty obvious, if muddy today.

The path from SM 903344 is harder to find.

Re: Ffyst Samson by Anonymous on Sunday, 30 July 2006
This is a fantastic Chambered tomb! I visited it just two days ago. The distance to get to it is quite far, but I wouldnt say it was difficult. I would certainly say it was difficult to find. It is surrounded by gorse making it almost impossible to be seen.

I had not seen any prior pictures and I only saw it as a dot on a OS Map so I was expecting a badly preserved cairn or something so when I was this I was pleasantly surprised. The views from this tomb are amazing, an almost 360 degree view.

There are viewpoints by archaeologists that the distance and effort into these monuments is one of the important factors. However there is an outcrop of stone (which can be seen in this picture) a stones throw from this tomb which the stone almost certainly was taken from...distance and great effort was not an important factor at this tomb then. The rock at this outcrop was interesting as they were almost like protruding from the earth and resembled standing stones themselves.
