linnie visited on 28th Oct 2018 - their rating: Access: 3 We were not able to find it until we saw 'locals' heading straight to it, but by then the tide had made it inaccessible. Understandably, the locals are loathe to assist tourists, heading down in anticipation, find this place.. Things that are felt to be sacred need to be respected, but it was a shame that we got so near, yet so far :) We still enjoyed the area, though, and even though Cornwall disappointed in terms of Tintagel and Merlin's Cave being 'closed' (:-o) and us not finding this actual cave, this region offered lots of spectacular sites the likes of which this little black duck had never seen before.. so all good! :D

Holywell Bay
Holywell Bay submitted by Bladup : Such colours at the Holywell (Vote or comment on this photo)
This must be the most unusual location for a holy well. The well is in the cave and only accessible at low tide. Water seeps from the multi-coloured rock and mothers formerly crossed the sands of Holywell Bay to immerse their ailing children in the healing water. Real pagan magic here with no obvious Christianisation.

The well was so famous that it gave its name to the whole bay. Narrow lane from Cubert leads down to Holywell Bay where there is limited parking. Approach the cave with caution at low tide and watch out for signs of the tide turning. Strong torch required.

Holywell Bay
Holywell Bay submitted by theendlessbreeze : Here is a series of images of the holy well at Holywell Bay, Cornwall. Starting from the top left, the entrance to the cave, the unusual and striking multicoloured rocks, the natural basins within the cave and looking down at the basins where you can see the water from the rocks collects in a natural bowl. A very unusual and beautiful place.

I would like to dedicate this Holywell Bay sunset to all those poor souls who perished in 'Nine Eleven'. If the Earth lasts out for another four thousand years someone might be investigating what our generation did, and what monuments we left behind. The former 'Twin Towers' of Manhattan, and the ensuing 'Ground Zero' would be well-doc... (2 comments)

legend has it that supposedly st Cuthbert (in which Cubert is named after) was given the well by god when he came ashore at Holywell in a somewhat similar story to st Piran

Another possibility being that St Cubert is actually St Cybi or Cuby, who visited many places in the West Country and Wales. His main base being Penmon, Anglesey.

I went to Holywell bay in Cornwall for a couple of weeks and to my suprise found this un intentionaly whilst with some Family and then later looked it up to find out what it was. Coming down to the beach infront of the Caravan park at Holywell bay i went left following the Beach all along and the tide was furthest out. It apeared as a slit but when i went in i saw the Red Steps up into the pool. It was very intresting to find and left me stunned

Visited the Holywell last week. To my surprise, many of the locals and also a 'grockle' who'd been visiting for 20 years were unaware of it and threfore unable to direct me. Also, people manning a tourist information caravan on a local campsite were also unaware of it! Eventually found it :-). In fact there are two contenders for the Holywell, the other being at Trevarrick, about a mile inland, close by6 the 18th tee of the local golf course. The Ordnanbce Survey map says 'recently restored'. I didn't find this one though :-( - maybe next time!
