Early Cross in Cornwall

Difficult to find amid the dunes of Penhale Sands, this 8 foot cross stands close to the sand-buried church of St Piran's Oratory. This is the earliest recorded stone cross in Cornwall and is dedicated to its patron saint and that of tinners and miners.

This photo of St Piran's Cross will show how far away it is from the huge modern cross - a mere pinprick in the distance. If you compare this photo with the pic of St Piran's Lost Oratory's mound and stone memorial, you will see that the modern cross is quite a lot nearer there. Close to St Piran's Cross; the site of St Piran's Lost Oratory on Penhale Sands, north of Perranporth. The ancient cross of St Piran is very close to the ancient chapel that has recently been excavated. This will be shown next Monday (31st October 2005) on BBC westcountry programme 'Inside Out'.

This close-up was taken in June 2005, one sunny evening. Harder to find was nearby St Piran's Lost Oratory, now buried and marked with a slab of granite. From this cross, head towards the huge modern cross on the sand-dunes. The s
