Long Barrow in Cornwall

This fine Neolithic long cairn is located on a slight ridge at the southern end of the Chapel Carn Brea summit. It is the only long cairn known in west Cornwall and as such a unique site. It is terminated at the wider southern end by a natural outcrop. It is 26 m long and varies between 5 and 6 m wide, before reducing to 1.3 m for the last 11 m. It is unexcavated and there is no visible chamber. The incorporation of a natural outcrop into the structure sits well in the Cornish early neolithic where hill tops with natural rock features are known to have been used as ceremonial sites (Tor enclosures). There are fine views and the monument is visible from the surrounding lower land. There are at least 9 other cairns to be found on the hill including the massive cairn at the northern end of the plateau. All of these would appear to be Bronze Age, including the latter site since it is thought to be predated by an underlying early Bronze Age entrance grave.

[Update September 2022: Historic England only records one site at this grid reference, see Historic England List ID 1006751, 'An entrance grave re-used as a kerbed cairn with cist known as 'Chapel Carn Brea', whereas the Portal shows two sites in close proximity, 90 metres apart - this site, the Chapel Carn Brea Long Cairn, the second being Chapel Carn Brea Tomb. To help resolve any queries, Bladup explains: "Chapel Carn Brea Tomb (A Chambered Cairn) is the massive Cairn on the summit of the hill, Chapel Carn Brea Long Cairn is 90-100m to the south of the Summit Chambered Cairn."]
