It was interesting to see how it interacts with the buildings in the village and find the signs of how its layout has evolved. Visited during a July heatwave, so the intererior of the Fougou was dry!

TheCaptain visited on 14th Jun 2022 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 4 Access: 4 I move on to Carn Euny village with its fantastic fogou, which has now had the round chamber covered, really magical. The remains of the village courtyard houses do not match up to the wonders of Chysauster, but this is more than made up for by the magic of the fogou.

Carn Euny Fogou
Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake : This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogo... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pathways to the Past organized a walk to this site on Sunday 25th May 2014. It is indeed an impressive place. Just to prove it was easilly possible I climbed upwards through the creep passage. I am about 5ft 11 and 12 stoneish and did it easilly mostly stooped with my hands on the ground just having to actually crawl for a short way.
I have done the same at other fogous. They are much easier than it looks and anyone of normal size could do it quite easilly.

the creep passages were originally the only way in to these enigmatic sites. I am posting a photo of the creep passage. Bizzarely a face that is like mine appears on the entrance wall!

It was very wet which may explain the distortions!

There appears to be the outline of a structure directly above the beehive 'tomb' The original entrance into the 'beehive' was very narrow and possibly hidden, the 'tunnel' fougou coming later.
Sound inside of it reverberates and would boom into a structure above it.
As for the niche - a cult of prophesying heads is attested to in the Welsh Mabinigion with Brans head speaking. A short distance from carn euny is an inscribed stone at Men Scryfa dedicated to 'RIALOBRANI CUNOVALI FILI' Rialo considered to be prince (Ri in Irish Gaelic is King) and the second part is Bran. So the name and presumably the context is known in the area.

When I visited Carn Euny in August 2004 a family of swallows had made their nest in the large underground round chamber. The parent birds made their entrance/exit through the low doorway, as I discovered when one flew past very quickly about an inch from my head. I do have a photograph of the young swallows in their nest, but it is a bit fuzzy because I took it using maximum zoom without a flash (so as not to disturb the birds).
