TheCaptain visited on 14th Jun 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 As it is such a lovely afternoon, I decided to climb Chapel Carn Brea hill with its cairns, and a fabulous view all the way around, the Isles of Scilly very clear out in the distance. Apart from the large hilltop cairn, there are clearly a couple of other cairns up here. First is an elongated stone structure on the southern hilltop, quite near to the modern firebeacon. It appears to have a kerb structure around a large chamber at the southern end. Secondly is an obvious cairn to the northwest of the hilltop, just downslope of the summit. It seems to have been a round cairn with internal chamber, which has been dug into in the past.

Chapel Carn Brea is a complex site including Bronze Age cairns/barrows, a Neolithic long cairn, hut circles and a standing stone. This site page concentrates on the cairns in this area. See our list of site pages below for others.

At SW 38532815 is an obvious cairn to the northwest of the hilltop, just downslope of the summit. It seems to have been a round cairn with internal chamber, which has been dug into in the past. The cairn is on a moderately steep west slope, the northern part is built on a bed of outcrop. It is between 10m and 12m in diameter, 1m high on the east side and 1.7m high on the west. Within the cairn there is an incomplete kerb of contiguous blocks and slabs up to 0.9m high and with a diameter of 6.3m. Many of the stones are fallen...

Another is a kerb cairn on a steep West slope, SW 38392806. It has a diameter of 4.4m, including an outer kerb of fairly contiguous blocks and slabs up to 0.7m high; a few are double banked, giving a width of 1.1m. The interior is barely 0.3m high, with a central slab oriented NNW/SSE which may conceal a cist.

Update September 2022: Historic England has separate listings for a other barrows/cairns. These are:
Historic England List ID 1004245 - round barrow at SW 38393 28423;
Historic England List ID 1004389, 'Kerbed cairn 100m NNW of Chapel Carn Brea' at SW 38527 28142;
Historic England List ID 1004317, 'Two ring cairns 110m north east of Chycarne' at SW 38354 28075 and SW 38398 28067.

The area of Chapel Carn Brea also includes hut circles, a Neolithic long cairn and a standing stone - see our list of sites at the bottom of this page.
