Stone setting and denuded Cairn on the Isle of Lewis. At the top of the hillock protruding above the general level of the moor, there is a low mound of stones and grass surrounded by peat and heather.

This Neolithic/Bronze Age Stone Setting is recorded as Canmore ID 293946, which says: "Two prehistoric stone settings … a theodolite survey of the horizon was undertaken. At the top of the hillock protruding above the general level of the moor, there is a low mound of stones and grass surrounded by peat and heather. On it is an annular oval setting, about 8 x 6m overall, of 13 stones which are up to 0.8 x 0.6 x 0.9m high. There are two or more stones internally. The other setting has two orthostats near the W edge of a spread of stones - possibly a denuded cairn - covering an area about 16 x 10m. The latter setting ('cairn') is on the summit and the annular setting lies to the NNE with a space of 12m between them."

(Note: only now do I realise that the stream I crossed, Abhainn na Muilne, the Millstream, might be worth following in the hope of finding the site of a Norse mill).

Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone) submitted by SumDoood : On your way out to the cairn / circle please, if visibility is good, look out for, and visit, this other feature to the west of your best route from the B8060. I think you should be able to see it quite easily if you can align the peaks and cols to coincide with this photograph. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone) submitted by SumDoood : When walking to the cairn / circle, please look out for, and visit, this feature which I noticed only after I'd returned to Lancashire. It does look to me like a circle (or similar shape), of fairly regularly spaced stones around the top of a hillock. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone)
Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone) submitted by SumDoood : Only when walking down the hillock below the cairn / circle on my way back to the road did I notice these 4 stones, and another a little further on, which all form a curve which might not be of no consequence. Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone) submitted by SumDoood : On the mound to the S are these two uprights which align with the "knees" of the Cailleach. The most distant peak to the right is the Cailleach's "nose". (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone)
Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone) submitted by SumDoood : Looking north. The E-W wall was very probably built with the stonework originally used at the ancient site(s), (which are just over the hillock in the middle distance). The large orange oval indicates what is probably a natural feature which vaguely resembles a stone circle. The orange circle indicates the unusually geometrically shaped rock. The orange oval on the skyline indicate...

Thanx, Anne. I don't know how I failed to find that on Canmore! It does seem odd though that they've called it Loch Erisort when other named places are nearer. I'd be happy if "my" site could now be referred to as Cnoc nan Clach (Hillock of Stone), on MP though.

It seems that the Canmore site 293946 refers principally to the two orthostats which I refer to and which align on the "knees". The orthostats are about 20m S of what seems to me to be the main feature I've described (which makes it a little difficult for me to understand why the main feature isn't listed separately!). What do you suggest is best to do now with my recording here on the MP of the "find"?

I've now read the References" on the Canmore record, and it's clear that Margaret Curtis and Co have visited and that they do refer to "my" circle of stones too, almost as if the site were all one integrated feature, so can we please rename this page on the Portal as Cnoc nan Clach, a stone setting? It is described (with characteristic accuracy by the Curtis team), as "an annular oval setting, about 8 x 6m overall, of 13 stones which are up to 0.8 x 0.6 x 0.9m high. There are two or more stones internally."

Hi, SumDoood, Having spent many hours 'unpicking' sites on Canmore, it is easy to miss something, especially when the names are different and the grid references vary. I think I've interpreted what you wanted doing - I've renamed the site page and the photographs so they display correctly.

If you need me to correct anything, or want anything else added to the main text, if you would kindly add a comment here, either I or one of the other admins can add it for you.

This looks such a lovely setting - I wish I could visit it! Your photos are beautiful.

Hi, SumDoood, I was really interested in your new site (I love a mystery and a previously unknown site). Plugging the co-ordinates into Canmore, there is a stone setting with a possible denuded cairn recorded only about 20 metres away at NB 2885 1897 and just under 300m south of the B8060 - could this be the same site? See Canmore ID 293946. The Canmore entries talk about "the midwinter sun skims to Sleeping Beauty's Forehead at 210.5 degrees … ". Sounds like a wonderful location!

Only later did I remember that the Canmore Search facility was asleep for 2-3 days when first I visited the location, and then I travelled home and after a few more days I wrongly converted that "sleep" into a negative search result in my memory.
