Ancient Settlement in Greater Manchester (Tameside)
Werneth Low was of importance from Paleolithic times onwards. For more information see The Tameside Council web page, which covers both Werneth Low and Hanginbank. The area of the enclosure can be easily accessed via a short walk from The Werneth Low vistor centre carpark and is located around the area where the war memorial stands today. On a clear view there are fantastic views up towards the Rossendale Uplands.
Whilst there are no entries on Pastscape or Historic England, the Journal of Antiquities features a page for both Werneth Low and Hangingbank - see Werneth Low and Hangingbank, Greater Manchester. The Journal adds: "some 2 miles to the north-east of Werneth Low is ancient ancient settlement or farmstead called Hangingbank, just south of the A660. It is a low hill covering 3 acres that was inhabited from the middle to late Bronze Age through to the Iron Age".
