Round Cairn in Gwynedd
Situated close to the copa (summit) of Arenig Fach, a peak in the Arenig range, the cairn is one of two Bronze Age cairns within 40m of each other. It is this cairn Carnedd Y Bachgen (cairn of the boy) that is mostly associated with Arenig Fach because the copa is known as Carnedd Bachgen, i.e named after the cairn. The cairn lies just NE of the copa, which is identified by a trig point and a large shelter made up from the scree stones that would have originally formed part of both the cairns. The cairn has a 10m diameter and it is raised to about 1m at its highest point. Mountain summit cairns are very common in S. Gwynedd.
Arenig Fach rises from the Migneint moorland and it resembles a bulky heathery lump from most directions except it's NE face which has steep cliffs and a small corrie lake at its base called Llyn Arenig Fach. The copa provides excellent views of the surrounding mountains with the Arenig range most prominent. However, the ascent and descent is challenging with narrow, heather covered paths more accustomed to sheep, and hidden holes likely to trip and injure the unsuspecting walker. I do not know of an easy route up the mountain.
Folklore
I spoke with the farmer/landowner on one occasion who informed me that the cairn and copa was so named following a tragedy whereby a local farm boy had perished whilst tending to his sheep in the 1800's. The boy had apparently succumbed to hypothermia on the mountain but it was days before his body was discovered and retrieved.
