At the Cerrig Duon site, Maen Mawr (Big Stone) stands in the upper reaches of the Tawe Valley 10km south of Trecastle, Powys. The circle and has other megaliths and avenues associated with it.

Update October 2019: This complex of monuments, which includes this stone circle, the Cerrig Duon stone alignment and the Maen Mawr standing stone (each of which has a separate site page here - see 'nearby sites' below) is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Carrig Duon, which includes a description, photographs, a simplified plan of the stone row and its associated stone circle (this site) and the Maen Mawr standing stone, access information and links to other online resources for more information.

The stone circle is also scheduled as part of CADW BR071 (Cerrig Duon Stone Circle) which adds: "The monuments are located on a plateau above a waterfall on the River Tawe". This site is also recorded as Coflein NPRN 95 (Cerrig Duon Ritual Complex).

Also refer to the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for the nearby Maen Mawr stone row, which includes a plan of this prehistoric landcape and how the monuments relate.

Cerrig Duon stone circle submitted by cerrig : There is an alignment to the Sunset here. You have to lie on your belly by one of the stones in the circle, but it is there. Cerrig Duon stone circle
Cerrig Duon stone circle submitted by Thingy : The huge bulk of the Maen Mawr stone makes it impossible to see any of the stones immediately behind it in the Cerrig Duon circle. However, using an elevated camera as here (approx height 8m), we can see everything and determine if there are any alignments between the stone circle and other stones. The two low stones nearest the camera align on the huge Maen Mawr stone to form a 'three-stone row' ... (6 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

This day, and again at the beginning of February, the shadow from Maen Mawr touches the taller of the two small stones, and the shadow from this stone in turn touches the final small stone. These are only times of the year that these two shado... (6 comments)

These type of stone row, with a large slab and the much smaller companion/s can be found in several places in the Brecon Beacons, not so common elsewhere. The thinking behind them is a mystery now, but these ones at least may be showing some clue to their use here. Cerrig Duon stone circle
Cerrig Duon stone circle submitted by cerrig : Winter Solstice midday shadow. I had wondered whether the small stones in line with Maen Mawr were some kind of a shadow marker. This shows that the longest midday shadow of the year goes beyond the stones. It would probably be about February time before it matched. So maybe not a shadow marker, unless it's for a x-quarter date. (9 comments)

It stood in the NE arc of the circle, and most of the ritual movement in my dowse at the end of July 2005 was found in front of it. On this page, which is the page for Cerrig Duon stone circle, are photo's of 3 different sites, all in the same area, separated by about 1.8 klm's. While I believe they are all linked in some way, I think it should be noted that they are different.
On this list is;
Cerrig Duon stone circle. ( most southerly)
Bwllch y Cerrig Duon Barrow( 1.5 klm's North)
Bwllch y Cerrig Duon Cist(1.8 klm's North)
The Barrow and Cist have their own pages too.
The name "Cerrig Duon" means" Black stones". While it is tempting to think that the best known of the monuments, ie the circle, is the owner of this name, it is more likely to come from the area around the Barrow. This is strewn with large Black comglomerate stones, hence the name "Bwllch y Cerrig Duon", or " Pass of the Black stones". Thanks go to Sem for pointing that one out.

The site you've listed as Cerrig Duon stone circle at SN851206 is that in fact the Maen Mawr stone and stone circles on the bank of River Tawe ?
The grid ref. match with this site but I've never known it under the name Cerrig Duon.

Best Wishes

Yes I think it has two names, I know it as Cerrig Duon, head past Dan Yr Ogof (spelling!) caves going north, turn off left a few miles further on, head up a rising narrow lane for a few miles up into the valley. Circle is on your left about half a mile up the lane from the cattle grid, on grass land. My favourite local circle but don't visit weekends in high summer, the access road gets full of cars and people. You can only see the big stone from the road, on top of a hill across the stream, but there is a ring of stones there. Take your wellies.

what a gorgeous place. it's a bit tricky to get to -- you have to get across a fast moving stream, but once you're over, it's a gentle ramble up a slope, and suddenly you're there ... middle of nowhere, with the valley spread out beneath you

breathtaking
