Maen Mawr
Maen Mawr submitted by AngieLake : This view of Maen Mawr looks north towards the even-shaped flat-topped mountain that blocks the north aspect of this lovely symmetrical valley. The larger Fan Brycheiniog mountain is out of sight to the NW of this view. Behind me is Cerrig Duon circle, overlooking the alternate E/W folds either side of the southern slopes of the valley from the semi-circular south end of this platform. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A short stone row with the Maen Mawr (Big Stone) which is over 6' high and stands 30' to the north of the Cerrig Duon stone circle.

It is considered to possibly be part of a short stone row, with two little stones lined up on its north side.

Update November 2019: This short stone row, which runs for 5.8m and comprises three unevenly sized stones, is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Maen Mawr, which includes a description, a plan of the row showing its relationship to the nearby Cerrig Duon stone circle and stone alignments, photographs of the alignment and the individual stones, access information and a list of online resources for more information.

This row is also recorded as Coflein NPRN 412997 (Maen Mawr, Standing Stone, Stone Alignment).

This alignment is part of the prehistoric landscape which includes the Cerrig Duon stone alignment and the Cerrig Duon Stone Circle, each of which has a separate site page here - see 'nearby sites' below.

Dowsing Plan of Cerrig Duon/Maen Mawr Pt.3 [06/08]
Dowsing Plan of Cerrig Duon/Maen Mawr Pt.3 [06/08] submitted by AngieLake : (This set of 3 plans from Cerrig Duon is for 'Cerrig', who asked to see more Brecon Beacon results.) Part 3 picks up from moves 21 and 22 in Pt. 2, and shows the ritual movement route leaving the circle and beginning to enact a pattern around Maen Mawr. I did not have time to continue to the very end, but the inset shows the last moves recorded that day. See note re. '32' underneath. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Maen Mawr submitted by SumDoood : At the far end of that possible row (which is angled about 319 degrees and not aligned with anything else I noticed (in low cloud and heavy rain)), I found three distinctive recumbent / landfast rocks. They seem to be uniquely dark (near enough black in the rain), for the area, and seem to me to be very similar, or of the same type, as the "intraformational conglomerate" which consitutes Maen Llia...

Maen Mawr submitted by SumDoood : Just to give you your bearings, the stone in the left of this shot is Maen Mawr and you're looking north. Away in the top lh corner I thought I'd seen a stone row. When I got to the far end of the possible row I found three uniquely dark, for the area, recumbent / landfast rocks very similar, or the same, as the "intraformational conglomerate" rock which consitutes Maen Llia 7.4kms to the east (we... Were there mammoths around then?!] ;-) It would be the side overlooking anything going on in the circle [Cerrig Duon], so if it was an 'idol' stone, this ca...

At 51.874222,-3.669939 the apparently long ago established north-south trackways have passed either side of the stone and the circle to meet at a fording point of the Tawe and continue northwards.

Note also the drainage channel running across the down slope to the west of the site. I doubt it's ancient - there are similar ones on the opposite side of the valley - but I guess it does a good job of keeping the ancient site a lot less boggy than it otherwise would be.

Not sure which image this refers to, but the paths are thought to be old drovers tracks and can be followed up the valley where they join the modern road, which was probably the drovers track at some time in the past.
