Standing Stones in Powys

This stone is not mentioned in any archaeologiacal texts. I noticed it for the first time today. It has been set with the bedding planes vertical and the erosion between these sights on a further three stones on the far side of Llyn y Fan Fawr (the shot looks roughly ENE).
Can someone please convince me that this is a natural bit of rock because everything I have seen around here makes me think differently.

Llyn y Fan Fawr
Llyn y Fan Fawr submitted by pab : Line of harder rock is clearly visible in this picture (Feb 08) a quarter of the way down Carmarthen Fan northern slope. When the ice retreated north from the Beacons, much of this material will have been deposited on the lower levels - presumably it will have withstood erosion down there in the same way as it has on the slopes? Will this not explain the many layered stones doted around nor... (3 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Does anyone know if (i) this lake has been surveyed (e.g. depth contours) and (ii) what is the white foam generated where the water laps against the rocks around the bank?(I have noticed this foam is prevalent in the nearby rivers which also seem to have much more underwater green growth now than say 30 years ago. could it be agricultural chemicals?

Anon. That puzzled me for a while as LyFFach is North facing and does not get the light required for the illusion. However, when I contacted Brian S Griffiths (author of The Secret and the Sacred Beacons) he told me the legend could originally have meant either lake.

Pab, thanks for the compliment on the pic.
Two things stuck me about this stone though. The "U" of Pen y Fan and Corn Ddu are directly east, ie Equinnox sunrise, and the "gunsight" points at the highest outcrop of rock on the East side of the lake.
Another interesting thing, the last time I was there I was sitting with my wife having sarnies, when a group of people walked along the other shore of the lake. They were speaking at normal voice levels and we could understand most of what was said. Good accoustics eh!
Finally there is the legend of the "Lady of the Lake." If you go there in the right conditions, sunshine and a breeze, with a little imagination you can see and hear the lake boil, thus heralding her approach.
None of this is evidence of it being man placed, but it's good fun searching.

hi sem, this is my first time on this site. i hope you don't mind me latching on to your thread here. it seems as though we have been tramping the same ground for a while.
i was up by cerrig duon this week trying to get a photo of the equinox sunrise comong through the cup of the beacons, just like you said it does.i was by the pull in at the top of the valley above cerrig duon. there is a mound here where the national park offload their bags of stone to repair the paths on fan foel.
clouds foiled me again, just like they have for years. i'll get the photo one day.
as for your siting stone, it probably is genuine, just like the stone rows you have found. i have been looking at alignments in the brecon beacons for a while now, and a magnetic bearing of 67deg with a right angle alignment of 157deg keeps coming up, so it would fit with your rows.
you might like to have a look at the mound one day, see what you think, its very interesting.
    best wishes cerrig

sem, I really love this picture which even made me try and find the view you gave, so PLEASE don't take this wrongly....won't these stones have simply come from the ridge when the glaciers retreated?

When I walked round Carmarthen Fan recently, it seemed to me that the line of stone visible a quarter down its northern face was made up with exactly the same sort of material, so chunks like this will have been deposited at lower levels when the ice receded? I will try and dig out some pics to show what I mean - but none of that detracts from this wonderful image!
