Marked on the OS maps as longbarrow or chambered long cairn, this little known but splendid monument on the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor is an easy half mile walk up a track from a parking place at a small road junction by Blackcoombe farm north of the village of Henwood.

The cairn is about 30 metres long by 15 metres wide at its southeastern end, and generally about a metre high above the surrounding moorland, and mostly substantially overgrown with bracken. In places, particularly at the narrow northwestern, uphill, end, it seems to have several nice surrounding stones, perhaps once forming a kerb around it.

At the wider downhill end of the cairn, there is the remains of a once substantial chamber, with several big stones fallen or still standing, about 2 metres or more in length.

Before planning for my visit to this part of the moor, I didn’t even realise this was here, and it’s terrific.
