Cahokia - Woodhenge
Cahokia - Woodhenge submitted by drlou : ‘Woodhenge’, Cahokia, Illinois. Few things are known about this timber circle at Cahokia. The evidence suggests that the original was constructed with 48 cedar posts around 1000AD and was probably painted with red ochre. From the central post 3 of the outer posts seem to line up to the equinoxes and the solstices. For further info about Cahokia, please visit the site page. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Timber Circle in Madison County, Illinois.
Within the Cahokia complex, evidence of a large timber circle has been uncovered. The circle which is thought to date to around 1000AD originally had 48 cedar posts and a diameter measuring 410 feet.

Around the post holes were traces of red ochre, which probably means the structure had been painted red. The function of all the posts is not known, however, from the central post 3 of the outer posts line up to the equinoxes and the solstices at mid summer and mid winter. The timber circle has recently been reconstructed with 40 posts been set in position. Because of its similarity to Woodhenge in Wiltshire, the Cahokia timber circle has been given the same name.

The circle was built at this location four separate times, with various numbers of posts in each construction phase. In some constructions only the center post and an arc in two or more directions was in place. The reconstructed henge is the ca. 1000AD version. If the circle were complete it would contain 48 posts, but the construction is minus the extreme western chord (which lies on land outside the Cahokia Mounds Park.) The other three timber circles were all in this general area, but were not centered at the same point.

Cahokia - Woodhenge
Cahokia - Woodhenge submitted by drlou : 'Woodhenge’, Cahokia, Illinois. The ancient city of Cahokia is famous mainly for its Mounds which are thought to have been constructed between 700-1400AD, but within the complex the remains of a timber circle with a diameter of 410ft was also found. In recent years the circle has been reconstructed with 40 posts been set in place. In this picture you can see a view from the central post.... (1 comment)
