Just across the E6 from Solberg in Norway is Hornnes - another rock art site on "The Prehistoric Road". 21 ships on an almost vertical rock face all pointing east to the sea (and the rising sun). The detail is so clear that it is possible to date them to the late Bronze Age from their design. The site signs here link such ships with the passage through life and on into the next world.

The site sign asks if this could be the passage of the sun goddess towards the eastern horizon, or the passage of souls to the horizon, stars and sky. One site sign (shown in one of my photos) illustrates the mythical sun ship seen engraved on Bronze Age razors with its daily journey through time. Burials in the form of stone settings laid out to form ships, and later actual ship burials give hints to the mystical significance of ships and these carvings. Stylistically the ships are dated to around 800 BC to 700BC. In front of the site an excavation was carried out revealing pot sherds and small lumps of burned clay dated to the late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. It is speculated that these represent some sort of ceremonial items deposited in front of the carving site. The red paint is added to allow identification by visitors and to preclude accidental walking on the site and to stop folk chalking in the images in order to get a photograph (the chalk can adversely affect the carvings). The paint is applied by archaeologists and is water based so that it does not adversely affect the art. The site sign hints that the carvings here may have been coloured in originally but there is no firm evidence for this speculative view. The site is reached after a 500 metre walk from the car park on route 110, which is the Oldtidsveien or prehistoric road between Skjeberg and Fredrikstad, close to its junction with the E6. An excellent site to visit.

Andy changed the name to the Solbergfeltet when I discovered that there were many photos from another site called Hornnesveien Østra.

The name is wrong! This is NOT the "Solbergfeltet"*! The name has been correct in the past when it was named "Hornnes". Another correct name is "Hornnesfeltet". Another official name is Post-Hornnes III www.kulturminnesok.no/kart/?q=Hornnes&am-county=&lokenk=location&am-lok=&am-lokdating=&am-lokconservation=&am-enk=&am-enkdating=&am-enkconservation=&bm-county=&cp=1&bounds=59.20706836261299,11.15334928035736,59.20476693300009,11.156997084617615&zoom=18&id=14637f69-6343-11eb-9df2-005056bf3d73

The rock art site referred to as Solbergfeltet is 1,2km NE of here.

Here's what the locals call them

    So, Hornnesfeltet or Post-Hornnes III?

Indeed the name used in tourist descriptions/sign has always been "Hornnes Helleristninger" (Helleristninger = Rock carvings) or sometimes also "Hornnesfeltet". "Post Hornes III" is the archaelogically correct name, but in the Megalithic Portal this should used as additional name only.
      So to sum it up:

      Name "Hornnes Helleristninger"
Additional names: "Hornnesfeltet", "Post Hornes III"

I was at this site today and want to point out that the ships are facing just off north (NNE), not east. This can even be verified on the Google satellite image view. There is also a small set of unpainted markings just to the north of the main rock face.

Just visited in the last two weeks.

On this rock there are some magnificent large boats, that it would appear at the time of my visit ( Aug 08) must have been painted recently. Well worth a visit. It really is only just off the main north-south E6 road through Norway and Sweden.

The 'oldtidsvejen' (this is the sign to look for on the E6) is clearly signposted and this site is part of a whole landscape of stone circles, burial mounds and more rock art. Refer to the nearby sites listed below or on the map.

Thanks 'greyweather' for putting the site on the map (from which I was able to find it)
