The Skjeltop dolmen (dolmen=dysse) is one of very few dolmens in Norway.
The tomb has a very interesting history! Anders Lorange writes in a report from the year 1872 (when the tomb was still intact) that a local farmer removed the top slab (the roof slab) to use on his farm house as building material, but he died soon after he had got the stones to his farm. Some years later the four wall stones on the side holding up the roof was taken away by two other farmers, soon after they had taken the stones, they also died. Since then, the tomb has been left alone.
In 1942, the tomb was reconstructed from previous description and drawings made in the 1800 century. The side stones and roof slab was put back in their original location, however, the reconstructed tomb was moved some 200 metres to the east of the original positon.
The ground at the original position was excavated and have given some findings from the Funnelbeaker culture. Charcoal was also found and it was dated to younger stone age, around 4500BC.
Today the tomb is located next to a grain field, inside a very pretty fir forest, and to visit it, people have to cross agricultural fields, visitors should ask the local farm owner before walking into the field!
