TheCaptain visited on 18th Sep 2020 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Heading back northeast, and after disturbing something fairly large within the forest edge, I proceed to what is marked as "Cairn Circle". I find a ring of 13 small pale stones, about 6 m in diameter. Nothing much to be found within the circle except for one other flat slab.

Cairn Circle with central cist on Lakehead Hill, central Dartmoor, in Devon

Located on the northern slope of the hill, all that remains now is the outer retaining circle, most of the central mound having been removed centuries ago. The interior of the cairn only rises a few centimeters above the present ground level. A single set stone within the centre is all that is visible of a probable central cist (kist).

Update November 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Lakehead Hill Platform Cairn Circle and the Lakehead Hill Cairn Circles, Cists and Settlements.

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 442596, as MDV5869 (Ring cairn in Bellever Forest) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1018510 (Five cairns, two stone alignments and three cists, forming part of a ritual complex on Lakehead Hill).

There are numerous sites in close proximity on Lakehead Hill. These are covered in detail in Butler's Atlas of Antiquities Vol 2. Map 27 Site 19 (see pp. 48-52). I can confirm that this is Butler's Cairn Circle & Cist No. 1 marked with a Dartmoor National Park post 10A. The precise location on Streetmap UK is SX64357777
