Stone Circle in Aust-Agder
This grave monument was removed from its original position at Vestre Godderstad to just next to the Holt church.
It is a triangular stone setting consisting of three pillar stones that forms the corners of the triangular grave. The sides consists of stone blocks on the same level as the slope. The corner stones are around 0,5 to 0,8 metres high. The sides in the triangle between the stones is around 6 metres. A single slab-like stone was raised from the centre. The graves date from older iron age, around 200-300AD.
The site was excavated by the University of Oslo in 1957 and bore clear traces of grave robbers. Remains consisting of potshards and burnt bones were found, pointing to a burial custom involving cremation and grave goods.
