Ancient Settlement in Sardinia (Sardegna)

The hill of Pani Loriga looks like a rich cultural stratification that documents the continuity of settlement from the pre-Nuragic period to the Punic one. The city, founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC and later fortified by the Carthaginians, presents itself entirely: city walls, urban and military structures, cremation necropolis and chamber tombs and above all a very remarkable ‘domus de janas’ necropolis of 3000 years BC. The archaeological importance of the site is mainly linked to the Phoenician Punic colonization: between the eighth and the seventh centuries BC a group of Phoenician settlers who had already settled along the south-west coast founded a town there. The choice of location was by no means accidental. The relief of Pani Loriga is isolated, suitable for a military settlement.
