In the center of the small village of Vang stands this rare picture stone with runic inscriptions. There have been found three runestones in Vang, the oldest one is this one, a combined picture and runestone from the later part of the iron age, also called the latest viking age period.
The stone has been dated to the first half of 1000AD. It has a strange shape compared to other runic or standing stones. It is tall and broad, but very thin, only about 8-10cm. The side where the picture is carved, the surface is very flat and almost look polished. The runic inscription is down on the thin side of the stone. The top of the flat picture surface is wider to one side than the rest of the stone, almost making it look like a "L" standing upside down.
The stone is 2.15 metres in height, about 1.25 metres wide and only between 8 to 10cm wide.
The runes on the thin side of the stone is made in the newer futhark, (about 700 to 1200AD), and they are translated to: "Gåses sons erected this stone in memory of Gunnar, their cousin."
The picture is a beautiful example of iron age art! It is picturing a lion or a mythological creature on top, in the middle, a big knotwork figure made in leaves and serpentine lines, forming a knot or cross in the middle of the stone or maybe some kind of stylized tree? The bottom half of the stone is a beautiful picture made in a intricate and even more detailed knotwork style, maybe it pictures a stylized serpent or dragon like creature? This style of ornamenting is called Ringerike style, after several objects found from this time period.
Today the stone is standing next to the church at Vang. It is unknown where the stone has previously been located, but probably it was next to the old stave church at Vang, and when this one was demolished, the stone were moved to its current position.
A frame with glass windows has been built to protect the stone against the elements and erosion, when I visited the site, it was raining heavily and the amount of rainwater on the glasses made it hard to get a good close-up picture of the runes.
