Standing Stone in Sogn og Fjordane
The Urnes site is actually two different types of sites. In the Urnes area is a small iron age burial site that has mostly been removed in later years, but remains of a large burial mound and a standing stone is still here.
On top of the hill is the Urnes stave church. The church was built around 1130 or shortly thereafter, and still stands in its original location; it is believed to be the oldest of its kind. It provides a link between Christian architecture and the architecture and art-forms of the Viking Age with typical animal-ornamentation, the so called "Urnes style" of animal-art. This makes it one of the worlds oldest still standing wood structures!
Archaeological investigations have discovered the remains of one, or possibly two, churches on the site prior to the current building. The excavations uncovered holes in the ground from earth-bound posts which had belonged to an early post church, a type of church with walls supported by short sills inserted between free-standing posts. It is not known if this church had a raised roof above the central space of the nave like the present church. The earliest possible dating of this church is the early eleventh century.
A reception and a small museum has been built just below the church. But parking space can be very limited!
The standing stone is standing near the edge of a natural formed stone terrace overlooking the Sognefjord just below the hill where the church is located and in the edge of a cultivated raspberry field. It has a beautiful position with a very nice view partially blocked by some larger trees.
The stone is shaped like a slim stone slab, about 2,3 metres in height, around 50-60cm wide and around 10-20cm thick. It is tilting a little.
Just below these two hills with the church and the stone is a small area with private houses, inside the garden of one of these houses is the remains of a large round burial mound, it is about 30 metres in diameter and today is about 1 metres in height, it was originally around 3-4 metres in height. A flagpole has been placed in the middle of the mound.
The Urnes area has probably been populated since very old times! The ancient sites and the nature and landscape around makes it well worth a visit!
