Within the village of Balestrand, Sognefjord are three large and beautiful round barrows. They have been restored in later years and are covered only with short grass and are easy to see. From this location there is a beautiful view over the sea.
The three mounds are similar in shape and size. In earlier years there were several burial mounds in this area, but many of them have been lost. In this area was believed to be the location of the farm of King Bele, a mythical king said to have lived here in the Viking age and also give his name to the Balestrand village.
The first round mound is inside the garden of a playschool for small children. It is around 20 metres across and around 2.5 metres in height. It has a beautiful rounded top.
The two largest barrows closer to the sea are both around 25 metres across and around 4 metres in height. They have also been restored and have beautiful rounded tops. On one of the mounds is a modern statue of King Bele, made in 1887.
An old standing stone from the Flesje farm was removed and re-erected on top of the other round mound. It is around 3.5 metres in height, around 30cm wide and around 20cm thick. It is located on top in the centre of mound 2. At the foot of this standing stone is another stone. It is laying down on the ground, it is around 4 metres long and around 40cm wide. It originally also came from the Flesje farm.
