The Tholos of Tituaria is located in the Tituaria from Milharado, in the municipality of Mafra and is not registered as cultural heritage. Archaeological excavations led by Veiga Ferreira took place in the 70s, but only in 1996 the official results of these surveys were published. The result of the dating points to a construction made in the Chalcolithic period.
About the Architecture
The type of construction of this monument is common in many tholoi of the Extremadura region of Portugal. Originally consisted of a first row of large stone blocks, placed inside and all around the circular excavation, forming the bottom of the chamber. Were then embedded successive courses of smaller stones which gradually passed into the thinner slabs forming a false dome chamber. This architecture certainly involved less investment of work than the building of a typical dolmen. Charting a simplified general plan of this monument we can just say that it was originally composed of a lobby, a hallway and a circular chamber. The slabs of the corridor exhibit little dimples.
Historical Background and Location
In this tholos is present the classic sequence of occupation of many tholoi or artificial caves. There's a first time of occupancy in the early/middle Chalcolithic period and a later use is attributable to the holders of bell beaker vases. The first moment of use of the camera of this monument should have included a good number of burials, in some cases such depositions were effectively made against the wall with the bodies in a fetal position. Were collected artifacts of chipped stone, polished stone and votive artifacts of limestone which were automatically associated with the burials that occurred during the Chalcolithic period. The last phase can be identified from the carriers of Bell Beaker ceramics, that reused this monument to perform burials. It was also found iron artefacts and this people probably used different rituals and procedures. Human bones were also found corresponding to the third millennium BC.
Have been probably a hiatus during which the dome of the Tholos fell. On the dome of the monument was identified several bell beaker burials in which the graves were made with stone blocks placed around the dead, made of fallen slabs of the false dome. The cover was also made with slabs from the same source. In this tholos is physically marked the trend towards individualisation of tomb space in contrast to the collective nature of the previous season. Perhaps this is the monument where this distinction is best marked alongside the emergence of coeval individual graves.
The hilly area of Tituaria seems to indicate that this monument cannot be correlated with the ancient settlements of the same area. The tholos is located halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus river (Tejo) being more accessible the path to the river.
About the current environment
In 2006 there was a site clean-up that unfortunately did not serve much. The current state of total neglect is deplorable. Weeds, bushes and brambles have dominated the space of the site and is almost impossible to identify it by naked eye. This monument is not even mentioned on the tourist route of the region. To reach it we need to drive on a dirt road in very poor condition and then we have to walk through private land to get to it. The garbage that surrounds the place is one of the best evidences of forgetfulness.
