Necrópole de Carenque
Necrópole de Carenque submitted by Bak_teria : This is the last and the bigger of all the three caves and unlike the others who are facing the southeast, this one is directed to the west. It had unique features. When it was unearthed in 1932 this cave was initiated by a type of circular vestibule, with open walls in limestone facing on one side and down the hall, partly made of thin slabs, linked with clay and superimposed on the ro... Discovered and excavated in 1932 by archaeologist Manuel Heleno these tombs are of great interest for the understanding of mediterranean prehistory. They were classified and protected as a Portuguese national monument in January 20, 1936. The construction and the first deposition of human remains date back to the late Neolithic (3000 BC) when there was already a very evolved agro-pastoral based economy in that area.

The Necropolis of Carenque consists of three collective tombs excavated in the limestone outcrops of Tojal de Vila Chã. Is situated between Carenque and Moinhos da Funcheira.

These tombs are generally referred as artificial caves. They were excavated in the rock in part of a Mediterranean cultural tradition. The tombs also show characteristics of a region that coincides roughly with the Tejo river estuary. You can find other burial sites of this kind in other regions of Portugal - the artificial caves of Palmela de Alapraia, the ones from São Pedro do Estoril and the tombs of São Paulo.

Giving somehow the morphology typical of a Dolmen these kind of artificial caves have a characteristic architecture. They are serviced by a hallway, usually facing east, that connects with a burial chamber through a small rounded shape portal. Both the hallway and the skylight of the chambers were covered with heavy slabs of limestone closing the structure from the outside.

All the archaeological materials and human remains from the excavations are in the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia (National Museum of Archaeology). Manuel Heleno was interim Director of this institution when it made this archaeological site work.

Necrópole de Carenque
Necrópole de Carenque submitted by Bak_teria : This second cave unlike the others continued to be used for burials until the age of bronze. Traces that prove regular use for several generations of individuals were found. The stature of the bodies did not exceed five feet. Most of them were young adults aged between 10 and 12 years old or between 40 and 50 years old. (Vote or comment on this photo)
